Chrome Remote Desktop vs Splashtop: Which Fits Remote IT Support?

Compare Chrome Remote Desktop and Splashtop for attended computer support, including cost, client control, business features and when each tool makes sense.

Chrome Remote Desktop is a sensible no-cost choice for occasional, scheduled support while the customer remains present. Splashtop Remote Support is a stronger professional platform when a technician needs repeatable support workflows, reboot and reconnect, file transfer, audit features, branding or managed devices often enough to justify a paid annual subscription.

That is the short answer. The more important question is not which product has the longest feature list. It is which access model matches the work being done today without giving anyone more access than the job requires.

For Computer Assist's current attended sessions, I use Google's one-time Remote Support flow. It keeps the first experience simple and customer-controlled while the business establishes real demand. Splashtop remains the planned upgrade when completed paid sessions—not wishful thinking—show that its professional features will earn their cost.

Remote support and remote access are not the same thing

Both vendors can support different kinds of connections, and the terminology matters.

In an attended support session, the customer is present, starts the session and approves the helper. The connection ends when the agreed work is complete. This is the right starting model for a one-time diagnostic or support appointment.

In unattended access, software remains configured so an authorized technician or account can connect later without the customer initiating each session. That can be legitimate for a managed computer under a clear service agreement, but it creates a larger access and security responsibility.

Computer Assist does not turn an attended health check into permanent access. Any future unattended-support service would require a separate written scope, explicit consent, controlled technician access and clear removal instructions.

How Chrome Remote Desktop's support flow works

Google's official instructions separate one-time support from permanent remote access. For support, the customer opens the official support page, installs the Chrome Remote Desktop component if prompted and generates a fresh access code.

When the helper enters that code, Google shows the customer the helper's email address. The customer selects Share to approve the connection and can select Stop Sharing to end it. Google states that the code works only once and asks the customer every 30 minutes whether sharing should continue.

Those controls are useful, but they do not make the access harmless. Google explicitly warns that the helper receives full access to the customer's apps, files, email, documents and browsing history during the session. Close private material first, verify the helper identity and begin only after a scheduled live conversation.

Google also states that Chrome Remote Desktop sessions are fully encrypted. The service is available through the web, but the customer may need to download and authorize the host component. On a Mac, that can include operating-system privacy permissions; on Windows, security software or a managed network can affect the connection.

Where Chrome Remote Desktop is a good fit

Chrome Remote Desktop makes sense when:

Its biggest business limitation is everything around the connection. It is a straightforward remote-control utility, not a full help-desk workflow. A growing support business may eventually need a branded customer download, easier reboot and reconnect, technician roles, session records, integrated file transfer or managed endpoints.

What Splashtop adds

Splashtop positions its Remote Support product, also known as SOS, for technicians and support teams. Its official product page lists attended access with a session code and commercial features that can include remote control for managed devices, reboot and reconnect, file transfer, chat, session recording, technician collaboration, branding and ticketing integrations. Exact features depend on the current plan.

For the customer, an attended SOS session normally begins by running the support app and providing a session code. For the technician, the surrounding business tools can make repeat visits and a larger client base easier to operate consistently.

That does not automatically make Splashtop the right purchase on day one. Its Remote Support subscriptions are billed annually, and vendor plans and prices can change. Before subscribing, confirm the current currency, annual total, endpoint allowance and whether the specific plan includes every required feature.

For Computer Assist, the upgrade review begins when at least two practical signals appear: five or more paid remote sessions in a month, regular reboot and reconnect needs, demand for branded instructions, a requirement for audit records or the addition of a second technician.

What about Microsoft Quick Assist?

Quick Assist is a useful fallback for many Windows 10 and Windows 11 computers. Microsoft documents a time-limited security code, customer approval for screen sharing and a separate request before the helper takes control. The helper signs in with a Microsoft account.

Microsoft also warns people to allow a connection only when they initiated the interaction with trusted support. Quick Assist can be convenient on Windows, but Chrome Remote Desktop remains Computer Assist's current cross-platform attended flow. The customer should use the tool agreed during the scheduled conversation, not whichever unexpected pop-up appears first.

Safety matters more than the logo on the tool

Whichever platform is used, a reputable attended session should follow the same rules:

  1. The customer initiates contact and confirms the appointment.
  2. The technician explains the purpose and expected scope before connecting.
  3. The customer verifies the helper identity shown by the tool.
  4. Passwords and payment details stay private; the customer types them.
  5. File transfers, installations, restarts, deletions and settings changes receive separate explanation and approval.
  6. The customer can end the session.
  7. One-time codes are never stored in email, voicemail, screenshots or client records.
  8. Sharing is visibly stopped when the appointment ends.

Unexpected calls, urgent scare tactics and demands for passwords, gift cards or payment while a stranger controls the computer are warning signs—not normal support procedure.

The Computer Assist choice

The current Computer Assist workflow uses Chrome Remote Desktop's one-time support option for scheduled, attended appointments. It is enough to begin helping people without carrying a professional-platform subscription before the support volume exists.

Splashtop remains a credible next-stage product. When real sessions require its workflow and controls, Computer Assist will trial the current plan on test devices before purchasing or directing customers to a new process.

If you already have an appointment, use the Computer Assist remote-support instructions. If you need help first, describe the computer problem. Do not generate or send a remote-access code until you are speaking with Computer Assist during the scheduled session.
